The three primary roles of App State's Office of Trademarks and Licensing office are:
- Protect the trademarks, service marks, logos, symbols and indicia that belong to the university and that are associated with the values and traditions of Appalachian.
- Promote the university in a consistent manner by allowing only uses by officially licensed vendors and on quality products.
- Create revenues to fund student scholarships.
Appalachian State University, established in 1899, offers a challenging academic curriculum, active classroom environments and close collaboration between faculty members and students on scholarly activities. With a student body of over 21,000, App State offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The small classes and close interactions create a strong sense of community, which has become an hallmark of the App State Experience. The university fields 17 NCAA Division I varsity sports, with 15 of those sports competing in the NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference.
